A Brief History of the Woodland

The woodland was planted in 1993 following negotiations with the Town Council and the Forestry Commission. Sue Williams of the Forestry Commission was instrumental in designing the planting plan specifically for community woodland use. At the time this was quite innovative but the results show the robustness yet quality of the overall design. Establishment has been good across the site and the wide range of species is still in evidence. A total of 41 species of shrub and tree were planted over seven
different compartments
The site has clearly been well maintained and is on going, but the site now tends itself to considerable further development as a dynamic and diverse site for both wildlife and the community it serves.
The original objectives were:
* To provide informal recreation, and provide access for the less able
* For local schools to utilise and as an outdoor classroom
* To create a site with a high biodiversity value
* To help screen the industrial estate on the adjoining site.
These objectives have to a large degree been achieved.
